Tips for visiting Hong Kong with a 3 year old

Selecting a kid-friendly holiday destination is one of the toughest jobs as a traveller. Depending on the age of your children, you will often look for destinations that is suited to them. Hong Kong is very diverse, with a mixture of culture, art and shopping. It would make a fun destination for older children but we visited with a 3 year old and even though it was a wonderful holiday, I don’t recommend it as a destination for young children.

If for some reason you are thinking of visiting Hong Kong for your next family holiday, here are some tips from our recent holiday to help you prepare:

It’s not stroller friendly at all! The streets are narrow and extremely crowded therefore making it a nightmare for parents with strollers. We opted to use our GB Pockit instead of Stokke and even though the Pockit is so tiny, it still felt like a nightmare to navigate. Opt for baby wearing if you can, it will make things so much easier for you.

Food is very difficult especially for a fussy toddler. Unfortunately we lived on McDonalds and pizza because proper restaurants are very expensive. We did find Indian food quite easily and enjoyed that a few times but if your child isn’t used to butter chicken and naan, then you may want to find an alternative meal whilst you enjoy a good curry. Visit the supermarket upon arrival to stock up on essentials like water, fruit, yoghurt and snacks. If your child enjoys pouch food like Squish or Hipp Organic then stock up on those before your trip.

Hong Kong Disney

Hong Kong Disney is a must. We stayed at a Disney resort for three nights and really enjoyed the park. Because the park is so small, you can literally take your time and enjoy every single ride, attraction and show. The heme park is located on reclaimed land in Penny’s Bay, Lantau Island, which means it’s a bit of a distance from mainland Hong Kong. The cost of accommodation at Disney is surprisingly affordable and I really recommend the Disney Hollywood Hotel. This was definitely the highlight of our trip. We absolutely loved the accommodation and opted to have breakfast with Mickey one morning – my daughter was in her element!

Ocean Park

Ocean Park should be on your list too. Ocean Park is a marine mammal park, oceanarium, animal theme park and amusement park situated in Wong Chuk Hang and Nam Long Shan in the Southern District of Hong Kong. It is the second largest theme park in Hong Kong and we absolutely loved it. From the thrill seeking rides (for my husband) to the beautiful giant pandas, every section of the park had something entertaining. The only section of the park that we didn’t visit was the oceanarium, for personal reasons.

Hong Kong Children’s Discovery Museum

This was so much fun and enjoyed by all of us. Hong Kong’s first children’s museum for children 0-10 years old with the goal of letting children “explore, create, and express themselves together.” There’s so much to see here so be prepared to walk around and really discover new things to learn. My daughter was in her element and loved every moment here.

If you do a quick Google search, you will discover tons of things to do in Hong Kong. But from our personal experience of visiting Hong Kong with a 3 year old, the main things that she enjoyed are listed above.
